STEEL BUMPER
RE-MANUFACTURING

THE REPAIR DEPARTMENT

When a chromed or repaired for painting
bumper is ordered, a check for finished
stock in the warehouse is made. If finished
stock is unavailable a core will be located
from our yards and taken to the stripping
department. (Damaged bumpers that are
repairable are referred to as cores)

All cores to be remanufactured are
immersed in an acid bath to remove
the chrome coating and surface corrosion
then washed and sandblasted on the inside
before being sent to the repair department.

Painted bumpers to be chromed require
additional immersion in a paint strip solution.
Painted bumpers to be repaired for re-painting
only require washing.

In the repair department, our skilled craftsmen
use manual and automatic hammers and
hydraulic presses to returns bumpers to
their original shape.

Templates, brackets and measurements are
used to check the bumper for proper repair
prior to it being sent to the grinding
department.

The Grinding Department

In the grinding department workmen using hand
grinders and semi-automatic reciprocating grinding
machines remove layers of nickel plating or paint to
expose the bare metal.

Abrasive belts and disks with grits of 80 to 150 are
used at this stage to level gouges and hammer marks
and leave the bumper ready for the finer grit abrasives
used in the polishing department.

The Polishing Process

In the polishing department, coarse grit-grinding
on bumpers is brought to a satin smooth finish by
polishing with 180, 240 and 360 grit abrasive wheels
and belts. Long, flat areas on bumpers are polished using
semi-automatic reciprocating machines while the
ends polished by hand-held working up the bumper
against an abrasive wheels or belt. Small opening and
contoured areas on bumpers are worked on with
hand-held polishing tools resulting in a bumper
that has been prepared on all visible external surfaces.
Repeat inspection during polishing insures that the
metal is smooth and free of pits, lines, grinders marks
or other imperfections before the bumper is passed to the plating department.
